Mastering Table Topics: Think on Your Feet

Table Topics is one of the most exciting (and nerve-wracking) parts of a Toastmasters meeting. You are given a question or prompt and must deliver a one- to two-minute impromptu response on the spot. Here is how to get better at it.

Buy Yourself Time

It is perfectly fine to pause for a moment before you begin speaking. Take a breath, repeat or rephrase the question, and give your brain a few seconds to organize your thoughts.

Pick a Structure

Even in an impromptu response, structure helps. Try the PREP method: Point, Reason, Example, Point. State your opinion, explain why, give an example, and restate your point.

Draw from Personal Experience

The fastest way to fill two minutes is to tell a brief personal story related to the topic. Stories are engaging, easy to recall, and make your response feel authentic.

Don't Aim for Perfection

Table Topics is about practice, not perfection. It is okay to stumble. The goal is to build your comfort level with unscripted speaking.

Volunteer Often

The more you raise your hand for Table Topics, the faster you improve. Treat each opportunity as a low-stakes chance to sharpen your impromptu speaking skills.

Table Topics is where confidence is built one spontaneous answer at a time. Embrace the challenge and watch your communication skills soar.
